Pros and Cons of User-Hosted Blogging Software

Advantages of User-Hosted Blogging Software

01. Full software control : The full array of options is available for you to change.
02. Free / open-source software available : A large number of free / open-source software is available. For the starter to moderately pro-blogger, free software is just fine. Corporations and large sites might need some commercial multi-blogging platforms.
03. Adaptability : Most blogging software have third-party design themes, blog layout and plugins to change style and functioning.
04. Your own URL / identity : You can run the software at www.YourDomain.com and control your web identity.

Disadvantages of User-Hosted Blogging Software

01. Complicated set up : Most software is easy to setup; but changing some parts of blogging software requires an understanding of html, css, php and (some) linux.
02. Cost : Most software is free; but domain name and domain hosting are ongoing expenses.
03. Updates : Most software requires regular updates; some of these updates will be mandatory due to security reasons.
04. Hosting hassles : All hosting companies have hiccups; from time to time, your blog will be unavailable.
05. Backup required : You will have to backup blog data at regular intervals. Most blogging software packages have a backup feature; third party plugins can automate this process.
