Pros and Cons of Hosted Blogging Services
Advantages of Hosted Blogging Services
01. Free or cheap : The largest hosted services like Blogger, Livejournal and Wordpress.com are free. TypePad starts at $4.95/month.
02. Simple to start and run : Hosted services have been designed with ease-of-use in mind. They are very easy to sign-up and use for everyday blogging.
03. Hosted software is automatically updated : Blog hosting companies automatically update the underlying blogging software.
04. Regular search engine visits : Large search engines visit new blogs created at these sites on a regular basis.
05. Automated backup : Blog hosting companies automatically backup the underlying database containing the blog data.
Disadvantages of Hosted Blogging Services
01. Limited configuration options : To run a safe and stable system, users are limited in the changes they can make to the blog.
02. Default design limitations : Some default options are not allowed to be set / reset in hosted blogs.
03. Lesser control : Overall, hosted services allow lesser control; for example running PHP scripts or CGI scripts or advertising services might not be allowed.
04. Generic URL : Your blog will have a URL like username.blogspot.com or username.wordpress.com or username.livejournal.com
05. Transferring to your domain can be difficult : Exporting your blog from a hosted service and importing it into a standalone blogging system is (usually) a painful process that can and does go wrong most of the time.
